Lake Yamanaka is a freshwater lake in Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture.It is one of the Fuji Five Lakes, with an area of 6.57km2, the largest area among the Fuji Five Lakes. The altitude of the lake surface is the highest in Fuji Five Lakes and is the third highest in Japan as a whole. On the other hand, the water depth is 13.3m, the shallowest of the Fuji Five Lakes. It is designated as Fuji Hakone Izu National Park.
It is registered as a World Cultural Heritage as part of the component of “Mt. Fuji-Object of Faith and Source of Art”.
Lake Yamanaka is popular as a sightseeing spot because of its many morning and evening scenery and Mt. Fuji view spots, attracting about 4 million tourists annually. In the morning and evening, many people visit the lake shore for photo shoots, and in spring and summer, many tourists enjoy bicycle rentals and boats. Centered around the Lake Yamanaka Park in the Asahioka area, there are many university and corporate recreational facilities, literature museums, art museums, and lodging facilities.

山中湖は、山梨県南都留郡山中湖村にある淡水湖です。富士五湖のひとつで、面積は6.57km2あり、富士五湖の中で最大の面積を持ちます。また、湖面の標高は富士五湖の中では最も高い位置にあり、日本全体でも第3位です。逆に水深は富士五湖の中で最も浅い 13.3mです。富士箱根伊豆国立公園に指定されています。「富士山-信仰の対象と芸術の源泉」の構成資産の一部として世界文化遺産に登録されています。
山中湖は朝夕の風景や富士山の眺望スポットが多数存在すること等から観光地として人気があり、年間約400万人の観光客が訪れます。朝方や夕方には湖岸に写真撮影に訪れる人や、春夏期には貸自転車や貸ボートを楽しむ観光客を多く目にします。 旭日丘地区の山中湖園地を中心に、大学や企業の保養所、文学館、美術館、宿泊施設が点在し、周辺には別荘地も整備されています。
